This handsome American Foursquare was built in 1908 by Desjardens & Sheblessy Architects. Perched at the top of Gaslight Clifton, the home was constructed and designed with presence in mind. Over 100 years later, the house remained remarkably intact—a time capsule (in all the best ways), ready for and deserving of a complete restoration.

The main living areas

Every wall and ceiling was covered in at least one layer of wallpaper. Once it came down, all that remained was beautiful, bare plaster—a rich, creamy texture that inspired the paint color for the entire first floor. Going light on the walls bolstered the impressive dark woodwork, providing a neutral yet architecturally interesting backdrop in which to design and furnish each room.

A modest but mighty kitchen

Originally, this kitchen would have been primarily used by staff and rarely seen by guests—a simple, durable, and hardworking space somewhat tucked away. While we use kitchens very differently today, the homeowners wanted to keep the floor plan the same. Our opportunity was to create something both beautiful and functional—honoring the history of the home while meeting the needs of modern living.

Materials and finishes

We pulled inspiration from an original kitchen built-in to mill and finish the new cabinets. Traditional oil-rubbed bronze hardware complemented the modern stainless steel appliances, while Rookwood tile added a bit of drama and richness, stacked up the wall.

Lights

Many of the original light fixtures were still proudly hanging throughout the house. Each fixture was carefully removed, refurbished, rewired, and reinstalled.

Woodwork and windows

Every baseboard, doorframe, railing, and spindle was faithfully restored, along with the original windows and doors. The leaded glass windows were also revived, some needing to be taken completely apart and reconstructed. White oak and yellow pine floors were also refinished throughout.

One last look

These homes are special and increasingly rare. It was a privilege to bring new life to this impressive dwelling—ensuring that while things feel new, fresh, and current, there’s still a sense of reverence and belonging.

The homeowners couldn’t be more pleased with the result, and we trust the house feels the same.
